The convenient location of Sabino Canyon

Located at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains at 5700 N. Sabino Canyon, Sabino Canyon sits right on the northeastern edge of Tucson. The parking lot and entrance to the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area provides easy-access to it all.

For your convenience, There are 12 restrooms and many drinking-water fountains throughout the canyon. Also, the Visitor’s Center also has a Family Restroom with a changing table.

Tram routes provide access to the visitor center. If riding the tram diminishes your sense of adventure, you’ll find miles of hiking trails that wander throughout the area. They will lead you deep into the Santa Catalina backcountry.

Please note that pets are not allowed in the recreation area. But of course, service animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act are authorized to be there.

Sabino Canyon tours and guides

Tours are narrated and provide fun educational opportunities for you and your family. At the top of the list is a 45-minute, 3.8 mile tour into the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Regarding the trams, they provide nine stops along the tour with several restroom facilities and picnic grounds located near Sabino Creek. Then, the tram turns around at Stop #9 and heads back down to the Visitor’s Center, at which point you may remain on board and hike back down.

The trams arrive on average every 30 minutes. The tours’ Bear Canyon Trail tram is a non-narrated two-mile ride traveling to the trailhead of Seven Falls. There, visitors may get off the tram at any of the stops and re-board later. Trams arrive on average every hour.

The Bear Canyon tram ride has three stops along the way for hikers to select their choice of trails. So if you’re looking for something easy on your feet, there’s always the option of riding the narrated, educational tram tour, which affords visitors a close-up of the stunning canyon views.

History and natural wonders

Sabino Canyon’s history is as diverse as it is fascinating. It’s estimated that some of the earliest predominant human occupants of Sabino Canyon were the Hohokam people.

During the rainy season, some of the trails will have you sloshing through creeks.

Sonoran Desert wildlife and features

While hiking throughout the canyon, you may get lucky and view a Gila Monster, Bobcat, Gambel’s Quail, Eastern Collard Lizard, Gopher Snake and more. The animals of this area adapt to Tucson’s 100+ degree summers and mild winters.

The Sonoran desert has two rainy seasons: gentle winter rains and a dramatic summer monsoon. Due to winter snow melt and summer electrifying lightning storms Sabino Creek flows almost year around. Come have a picnic at one of the many pools and cascades that grace Sabino Creek.
